You will see the audiologist again once the inner ear has healed sufficiently so that they can program the cochlear implant and teach you how to operate the external processor in your ear. Reintroducing hearing to the brain and nerves is the aim. Over a period of four to six weeks, a number of programming appointments are held. The majority of people are unable to understand the noises coming through the implant during the early programming appointments. Together with your auditory rehabilitation therapist and audiologist, you will create a plan to teach your brain to interpret sounds in a way that best suits your needs and way of life. Throughout the implant's lifetime, programming sessions are required every six to twelve months after that. The care team can evaluate the patient's progress during these sessions as the brain develops its ability to interpret sounds. Should it be required, the implant is adjusted.
